What Does "Winter Garden" Mean?
A winter garden is a glass-enclosed structure with an aluminum load-bearing skeleton, added to a home's terrace, balcony, or garden. Some people also call it a "glass room" or "four-season room." It can be used like a part of the house: a sitting area, plant corner, breakfast room, children's play space, or home office. It can be used in all four seasons because the glass lets in sunlight while keeping out cold, wind, and rain.
How Does It Differ from a Regular Glass Balcony?
A regular glass balcony encloses the balcony opening but typically has a single layer of glass and no roof. A winter garden has enclosed sides AND a roof, making it a fully enclosed, habitable space. It can genuinely reach room temperature in winter because double or triple-pane glass is used, the roof is insulated, and sometimes the floor is thermally treated as well.
Glass Options
Double glazing with a 12–16mm air or argon gap is sufficient for standard applications. Triple glazing offers much better insulation for cold climates. Solar control coated glass is recommended for sun-facing facades to prevent overheating in summer.
