How Does an Automatic Pergola Work?
In an automatic pergola, the roof moves with a motor and remote control system. In retractable-roof models, the fabric or aluminum roof gathers to one side or opens with a motor. In the bioclimatic model, aluminum louvers rotate to open. An optional wind sensor automatically gathers the roof at a certain wind speed; a rain sensor closes the roof when rain starts.
Types of Automatic Pergolas
Retractable-Roof (Pergotente) Pergola
The roof is fabric or membrane material gathered to one side by a motor. An economical and quick shading solution.
Bioclimatic Pergola
Aluminum louvers rotate on their axis. The most durable and comfortable system; see our Bioclimatic Pergola page for details.
Advantages of an Automatic Pergola
- Provides sun and rain control with one touch
- Automatic protection with sensors, works even without you
- Makes the outdoor space usable all four seasons
- Increases outdoor seating capacity for businesses

Frequently Asked Questions
Does an automatic pergola leak water in the rain?
Bioclimatic (louver) models do not leak when closed and discharge water. Fabric-roof models resist light rain, but the louver system is recommended for heavy rainfall.
What happens during a power outage?
Most systems allow manual operation; a backup battery can be added to some models.
